100 things about me, # 14

I am very picky about who cuts my hair.

this is definitely one of those items that makes me realize just how far i was stretching when i sat down to do that original list of 100 things. i mean, really, what was i thinking?!?

the only time in my life that i actually had *someone* who *did* my hair was for about two years when jack was two? three? shortly after i was married, i cut my hair (it had been in a very stylish mary tyler moore flip - way too much maintenance for my every day life.) then, i was pregnant, or had a newborn, or was busy, or didn't care? i don't know, but that post-wedding haircut, or hastily trimmed versions of it, seemed enough to carry me through.

and then, i met kathy. i stumbled upon her. she was the "next available" in a salon that accepted walk-ins. she managed to talk me into an ultra short, tres stylish cut. with color!! this was a whole new world for me.

for several years, i honestly lived the life of a woman who schedules regular hair appointments every six weeks. i had my hair colored. twice!! (sadly, i can't find photos - pre-spt and all...) she even gave jack his first haircut. i followed kathy to one, then another, salon. she even made a housecall once, i remember. no one else could touch my hair.

one day, kathy fell off of the face of the earth. she was just nowhere to be found. thus ended my salon days. i think when i wrote my 100 list, i was still clinging to those memories! because, nowadays, i am a Great Clips girl. i don't schedule haircuts. more likely, i wake up one morning and realize my hair has finally grown out of control, and i run to the Great Clips during lunch for a bit of instant relief.

of course, at the Great Clips, my hair is at the mercy of a long, ever-changing list of "next availables." i have learned to come prepared, snapshots in hand, to help better explain the *look* i think i'm going for. and heck, i can get in and out of there for under $20!! on my next list of 100 things, perhaps i will change that to read, i am very picky about how i will spend all that money i save by going to Great Clips!

my 100 list was hard for me to fill out as well.

i am scared of great clips, but i've always really, really wanted to go. my ends are shot, so maybe it's time to do it.

Finally, a Great Clips Sista! I have played the stylist roulette game over there for a long time. Finally found a gal who's consistent and chatty as hell so I'm set! (for now...crossing fingers) Loved your SPT -- I'm all about the hair pics -- "all the better to style you with, my dear."

i found my prize stylist at a fantastic sams (just like great clips). she was so good you would show up at 10:00 to get your haircut and you were lucky if she could fit you in. there was a colette concert line in front of the salon every morning she worked. when she started her family her hubby built her a little salon in her garage. so then you had to take a buddy with you, someone to care for the babies while the other got their hair done. but alas, she moved and now... im searching again!

My #14 was also a not-completely-accurate statement about hair!

HA! I love the pic of you with all your mag hair clips...that is awesome!

My too.. I hardly ever get my hair cut because it is a lot of drama for me!!

Cute photo. I'm really picky who cuts my hair too. Im paranoid to have someone mess it up. One of my #100s is about this too. I won't go to just anyone. It's about time I go again too and it's stressful thinking about where!

I feel your pain about losing your Mary. I wonder what happened to her. Glad you've found your special Next Available though. I've never been brave enough to try Great Clips, but I sure would like the $$ savings.

funny how things change!

eek! now you have me thinking "what if..." i would be lost! :)

great deep in thought spt, btw.

A good stylist is something to hang onto for sure. I'd be lost without mine. You're brave to take your chances at Great Clips, but whatever works eh?

I actually have had my husband cut and color my hair for years. He is surprisingly good at it. But recently I have started going to a friend who cuts and colors out of her home, and I love it. I look so much better! However, it is taking me much longer to get my hair done now, because I have to actually find a babysitter. But it is worth it. Your hair always looks fabulous. Great clips works for you!

oh the stylist search.
I went the great clip/super cuts route before, but they always messed up my hair. It is so hard to find someone that knows how to cut short hair. I finally found someone right down the street and she starts at 7am on saturdays. I can get my hair cut and be home before some of the kidlets are out of bed. Oh and she is fairly cheap.

Oh, I am so missing my Oregon stylist right now. That's the worst when they just disappear on you! Cute photo with the haircut pictures and you peeking over the top.

Love that you've torn out all your looks.

I'm like you...I wake up one day knowing that my hair must be cut that.day.

I once went to a Great Clips type of place and didn't have a great experience. I sat down, she brushed my (dry) hair, and cut straight across. No joking 5 minutes later I was out the door. I figured I could have a friend do that for free and save my $20.
I now only go to my friend who is a hairdresser and she is great...my appoint is in 1 1/2 hrs! I can't wait...these grays are out of control!

I'm still on the quest for a stylist that I love. But I'm definitly a no maintainence kinda gal.

My hair dresser from High School is my stylist of choice. Everytime I go back to visit upstate NY I stop in for a cut and color if he feels inspired. Mind you this is about once a year. :-) I can not find anyone else I trust.

i am having fun with this 100 list.

I used to cut my own hair and one day realized that it just wasn't
"cutting" it (like the puN!) Anyway, I gave-in and up here in Canada it's $170 for a cut and color - it's awful, but it's better cutting my own! Cut SPT photo Lelly! Very cute!

I once was like that...now I am just happy when I get my hair cut!

i love it! i also have to just cut my hair that day...or die! and i think your hair looks so cute for Great Clips...who knew? i'll have to give it a try! hair is always such an adventure...

I have a few friends that do that (just walk into a great clips) I have to admire you for that. I am scared to death of doing that. Perhaps my 4th grade haircut still haunts me to this day.

Until I met Melanie, I was a drop-in customer, too, Lelly. I can only think of one that I wished I hadn't had. She had four husbands and wanted to tell me about each one. My hair just kept getting shorter and shorter and shorter as her story got longer and longer and longer.

I agree. If I'd have known I was SPT'ing my 100 when I wrote them I'd have done more thinking!

Well you look fabulous so you must be doing something right!

I can totally relate to your story because my hair dresser just moved one hour away from my house. I love her and all, but I don't know if I should make the trip every month.
Great SPT....I'm happy to be able to participate again!

I like the cheap cuts, too. I have only found one person I ever really enjoyed going to and we were only there for 9 months- enough for like 3 hair cuts! The couple of times I have tried more expensive salons I have been very unhappy with the results!

You're so funny! I once had a chosen stylist (she convinced me to try highlights!) when I lived in Great Falls, but haven't found a replacement here. I am now a Great Clips girl too.

Cute photo. I just went to a salon for the first time in years.

I love this. I have had two stylists like that in my life. One was when I lived at home and now she is far, far away. The other was a guy I went to when I was in college and then a couple of times after we moved back here. He really understood my hair. I would definitely still be going to him if he hadn't raised his prices 4 times!!

I have a similar story. How do hairdressers fall off the face of the earth? Is there a hairdresser black hole? Cute post and Great Clips, next available does a great job!

So funny- a lot of mine from my list are kinda outdated now. I have such a hard time sticking with a style that I am sure my friend hates doing my hair now because it is never to "refresh" the old cut- always a new creation.

Aren't we funny beings about our hair?
And it starts young when we are so afraid to get it cut!
I too have similar feelings about my hair stylist. It is my cousin who has a cute place called the Hair Saloon.
I just can't think of having anyone else cut it!

I remember going to Great Clips at the start of Jay's residency because I was determined to be frugal. But, the girl had a mullet and she cut my hair without wetting it down and I swore off that act of humility once and for all.

I love your explanation. It's nice to know we aren't permanently fixed by our lists:)
