how sweet it is

it is ten o'clock on Saturday night and i'm crashed on the sofa watching yet another marathon of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. (side note: could someone please slip a few new phrases into Guy Fieri's rotation? there's just got to be a better way to describe food than "off the hook!") i can't even count how many Saturday night's I've spent hanging out watching the Triple D's. it's kinda my Saturday night thing. even though Guy agitates me with his talking-with-food-in-his-mouth, there's something actually a little comforting about my sad Saturday night routine.

anyway, this day is done, and despite it's undertones of blah, i consider it pretty much a success. i set out to have a laid back day, and i accomplished it. as Guy would say, "winner, winner, chicken dinner."

dinner was a few hours ago, and i've even had tea and cookies since then (have you had the new Newton's Fruit Thins? yum!). the kitchen is clean, despite the fact that a certain 10 year old keeps wandering in and out of there. there's no reason to go back in there.

except.

i know there is an open bag of mini Reese's pieces in the cupboard.

i don't really crave sweets. chocolate is not a food group that i consider to be a temptation. i can take it or leave it. but throughout this year of obsessive calorie counting, some well-timed chocolate consumption has been a God send.

i'll settle for the Reese's, although truth be told, i prefer dark chocolate. i especially prefer dark chocolate with sea salt. in fact, now that i think about it, i would dearly love a square of dark chocolate with sea salt right now. as Guy would say, that square of dark chocolate with sea salt "could just hang out in my mouth for a little bit."

i'm undecided about the Reese's, but just knowing it is there agitates me and comforts me at the same time. kinda like Guy.

me and chocolate. our nightly ritual. you could say, "this is not my first time at this rodeo."

i know Guy would.

resistance is... futile?

just today, i have been the recipient of three "desperate" sounding emails:

1) we need more soccer coaches for the boys
2) we need Sunday School teachers
3) we need to create a "working moms" group at church

these are not the type of emails i need to receive.

these are the types of emails that cause me to overextend my overextended self.

(these are the types of emails that make me question if i'm doing enough.)

these are the types of emails i can't ignore...

nor'easter

like a hurricane, without the humidity.

i really wish i could have captured the rain as it fell behind me.
(hey, is anyone surprised that my hoodie is BLUE?!?)

what NOT to wear

i wore my favorite autumn dress yesterday. who cares if it's 90 degrees outside? it is AFTER labor day, and i WILL celebrate fall.

and i carried my purse. my summer purse. to work. to my Rotary meeting. to the store.

and it was bad. very, very bad.

goodnight, moon

my son has a sleeping disorder.

the disorder is that he is a seven year old who stays up too late!! i used to laugh it off when he was a baby, a toddler. my standard reasoning (at that time) was that my super social and highly inquisitive boy did not want to miss out on anything. that seemed like a much cuter line of reasoning when he was eighteen months old.

and now, he is seven, and he still fights sleep. when my friends casually mention that their children are asleep by eight, i wonder if they notice my eyes glazing over as i try to imagine how blissful that would be!

the other night, he asked me how i used to get him to fall asleep when he was a baby. i told him that i sang to him. i was prepared to sing to him that night. oh, could it be that easy?! then he asked me how matty used to get him to fall asleep, and i told him that daddy would rub the bridge of his nose.

he said he thought the nose rubbing would work.

and so, i rubbed his nose. and his back. and i covered him with his blanket. and i re-covered him. and he said, "i think the nose rubbing is working."

and 45 minutes later... sleep.

i'm sorry, people, but that was 45 minutes that i could have been blogging!

i've come to the point where i find myself stating "this is MY time" after 9 pm. and repeating this over. and over. this IS my time. this is the time of day i NEED to decompress, to feed my own soul. i figure i'm losing about 920 hours of ME time over the course of a year. that's over 6300 hours of ME time over the course of his little life, people!!

i just know you all want to help me with this. because, just think how much fun it would be if i had 6300 more hours to blog!!
