for prosperities' sake

my mom makes a batch of "hoppin' john" every new year's day, so this afternoon i went to her house and retrieved enough servings for matty, jack and i.

in the south, it is said if you eat a serving of "hoppin' john" on new year's day, you will be blessed with good fortune throughout the year.

i just learned that if you eat it the next day (when it is called "skippin' jenny"), you have an even better chance at prosperity.

wish i'd known that about an hour ago...

Food mixed with Luck...I like that. I wonder if any restaurants serve Skippin' Jenny on New Years day? What a fun tradition. Happy New Year!

I've never heard of this stuff, but could use some good luck in the new year for sure.

oh man, my dad made us eat black eyed peas every single year!

I loved Ann's comment. I will have to find a recipe for this. Good fortune in a pan!

Isn't New Years cabbage supposed to make you rich too? Why such gross food? I took matters into my own hands, stuck jelly beans inside cupcakes and told my kids it meant good luck if you found a green one and sound investments if you found a black.

Just wait, in a few generations they will be singing my praises when children all over the world are no longer eating black eyed peas and instead enjoying good luck jelly beans!

We had our peas and our cabbage for $ as well!

In Brazil we have to eat lentils and green grapes for the good fortune!

mmmm . . . it actually sounds like a good recipe to me. (And I like cabbage, too. But NOT jelly beans. I guess I'm weird.)

Sounds like a fun New Year's Day tradition! It'll be hoppin' john and skippin' jenny for me next year. (And in 2009 I hope to do a soup swap, and a little Christmas Eve party . . . !) Thanks for all of the great inspiration and ideas, Lelly.

Huh. I guess I'm weird too, because I'd rather eat that than jelly beans! But I would not be surprised if Kelly's idea catches on.

Love your photo and your last line, Lelly. Here's to good luck!
